Civil disobedience movements, are being treated repressively, believes Ariane Lambert Mogiliansky, professor at the Paris School of Economics, and active member of Scientists Rebellion. “We are increasingly treated like criminals, eco-terrorists, or people who do bad things that society must protect itself from. That makes no sense. On top of this there are private interests, which are increasingly present in institutions, as well as the diminishing protection of scientific research. Since the 1970s-80s, the major industrial powers have realised that they are causing destruction, so they have developed a strategy to take control of science to prevent it from turning against them.”

Manufacturing ignorance was the theme of the conference and lively debate organised by the Institut Francais of Bucharest, with the brilliant participation of Mihail CARADAICA, lecturer at SNSPA and leader of Pădurea de Mâine (Tomorrow’s Forest), champions of reforestations of all sorts in Romania. I represented 2Celsius and had the joy to moderate, rather poorly since the programme has been prolonged with 45 more minutes due to an intense and extended interactivity with the Romanian scientists there present. 🙂

Discussions revolved around a diachronic perspective in manufacturing ignorance in matters related to climate emergency and generally global heating, today’s challenges in the political and social realms, as well as the role of governments and civil society in tackling fossil fuel industry’s playbook of manufacturing doubt and making science vulnerable.
