Trump’s win is not due to his merit, but to the demerits of those who lost. After many decades of massive (neoliberal) development in almost all of the Western world – let me include Central and Eastern Europe therein, after waves of suffocating monetization of so many services, there has been no political Left worthy of this name. I am thinking of an evolved form of socialism, a green political thought, locally empowered communities, all in step with our times – as they are challenged by crises of social services, by the unleashing of the dogs of war, and by climate emergency. This Left should have known how to interpret the growing needs of the weakest walks of life, of the people in increased difficulty. The green-collar economy was so weak globally and took over the labor sins of big oil or, altogether, the bad habits of conventional corporate business as usual.
Alas!, there are no updated right-wing parties either. But the immense reactionary vote is of those who would like to feel represented in the terrible necessity of employment, in social rights, in the craving for decent social services, education and public health. Instead, they see almost exclusively the civil rights of minorities in the foreground. In all honesty, would you vote for someone who makes you feel like they are making fun of you? Civil rights are most certainly essential political targets, democracy needs a continuous transformation, an inner fight for more and more liberation of the individual, democracy is never complete. Civil rights must not be abandoned, not ever! But without work, without a decent and supportive social state and without a stop to the continuous greedy dive into our hard earned money for the most basic services, we all find ourselves hanging in the void, in dark depression and with paralyzing poverty looming. And amongst “we all” there are both minorities and all other spectral categories of the population.
Until this is comprehended, trumpism will continue to win big time, and if the left doesn’t evolve, the right in both America and Europe won’t evolve either. Right wingers, without the evolution of the leftists, will not need to evolve in any way; they will just wait for the woke-tainted pseudo-leftists to screw up as they keep doing so correctly and to behold as they drift far away from the working people. And within the understandable backlash against the pseudo-leftists, d’you know who’s gonna collapse? Climate. Nature. Earth.
